Preventive maintenance is the best way to prevent problems before they happen. A pre-season tune-up prolongs the life of equipment, improves efficiency and reduces the cost of operation, which can easily pay for the cost of heating and air conditioning maintenance plans. However, some issues can be prevented or corrected by following these tips.

Troubleshooting and HVAC Maintenance Checklist

1. Check your thermostat to verify that the fan is on and that the control is in the cooling position.
2. Inspect furnace, intake and return filters. If the filter is clogged, change it immediately, and replace additional filters monthly. This should be part of every preventive maintenance plan.
3. If you have a split system, make sure that your indoor air handler or blower is functioning. The furnace should be turned on, and the thermostat should be set to cool.
4. Make sure the outdoor unit is working. If you don’t hear anything, check the circuit breaker inside your house. If all breakers are turned on, inspect the outdoor disconnect switch. This switch is in a small box on the exterior of your home near the HVAC unit. Make sure the switch inside is in the on position. Troubleshooting Heaters and Gas Furnaces

1. Begin by checking the thermostat, and make sure that it’s in the heat position. If necessary, increase the temperature to see if the system will start.
2. Check all filters and vents. Bryant gas furnaces have a standard air filter that should be changed monthly. Many systems are also equipped with a 2-inch pleated Purolator filter that should be changed every eight weeks. Make sure that all vents are open and aren’t blocked by furniture, curtains or other items.
3. Verify that the heater or furnace is receiving power. First, check the fan switch on the thermostat. Next, make sure that none of the circuit breakers in your electrical panel have tripped. Finally, inspect the SSU switch on your furnace, and make sure it’s in the on position. This switch is located on a metallic panel on the side of the unit.
